Three principles that prevent nearly every sizing mistake
The rug should connect the furniture and define the living zone.
In an enclosed room, generally leave 12 to 24 in (30 to 60 cm) of visible floor around the rug.
A rug that is too small fragments a room; a generous rug creates a calmer, more intentional composition.

Choose a 2 x 3, 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 ft rug based on the width of the entry, and confirm door clearance.

Keep a visible border
Leave approximately 3 to 6 in (8 to 15 cm) of visible floor on both sides and keep doorways clear.

- Mark the proposed rug outline on the floor with painter's tape.

Polyester — pattern and everyday care
Polyester is a synthetic fibre used in many easy-care rugs. For a family living room, compare low-pile designs and permitted cleaning methods. Fibre content alone guarantees neither machine washability nor resistance to every stain.
Polypropylene — a practical option to compare
Polypropylene is a synthetic fibre often chosen for stain resistance. For dining rooms and busy passages, also consider surface texture and how easily chairs move. Outdoor use must be explicitly approved: not every synthetic rug is suitable for a patio.
Viscose — sheen with extra care
Viscose offers a silky appearance but needs extra care around liquids, including water. If spills are frequent, we recommend comparing easier-care designs first. Blot promptly and follow the manufacturer’s directions or seek specialist advice.
Blends — read the full composition
A rug can combine natural and synthetic fibres. A “wool rug” is not necessarily 100% wool. Compare proportions, construction and cleaning requirements instead of choosing from one highlighted fibre alone.
Choose for what happens in your room
- Under a dining table: measure actual chair pullback and compare lower surfaces that let chairs move easily. Include the rug pad when checking thickness.
- With pets: identify your priority: vacuuming hair, cleaning accidents or avoiding snagged claws. A washable label does not automatically address all three.
- In a bedroom: balance the comfort you want beside the bed with the care you can manage. A plush pile and a lower woven surface feel different.
Performance is a feature, not a fibre

Four essential care habits
Vacuum gently
Use low power and avoid an aggressive beater bar, especially on fringe and delicate constructions.
Blot, never rub
Absorb spills quickly with a clean, undyed cloth, then follow the manufacturer's directions.
Rotate regularly
Turn the rug every 3 to 6 months to balance sunlight and foot traffic.
Add a rug pad
Choose one compatible with your floor and slightly smaller than the rug to improve grip and comfort.
Product-specific care instructions always take priority. Performance, outdoor and washable are not interchangeable terms.

What to know before ordering
What is the most versatile rug size?
An 8 x 10 ft rug works in many living rooms, primary bedrooms and six- to eight-seat dining areas. The correct size still depends on the furniture arrangement rather than room area alone.
Does every living-room piece need to sit on the rug?
No. In a compact room, the front legs of the seating may rest on the rug. In a large room, placing the full arrangement on a 9 x 12 or 10 x 14 ft rug usually creates a more cohesive look.
How far should a rug extend beyond a dining table?
Allow at least 24 in (60 cm) beyond every side of the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled back.
Do wool rugs always shed?
Some initial shedding can be normal, particularly with certain hand-tufted wool rugs. It varies by fibre and construction and should lessen with appropriate care.
Are all performance rugs machine washable?
No. Performance, machine washability, stain resistance and outdoor approval are separate specifications. Check the individual product details.
Are the listed dimensions exact?
Sizes such as 8 x 10 ft are nominal. Actual measurements can vary slightly by brand, collection and construction. Confirm the selected variant.
