Size guide

The Maison Olive guide

Choose a rug that gives your room the right proportions

Size comes before colour. This guide brings together the rules designers use to choose the rug size, placement, material and construction that truly fit your space and daily life.

Choose by room Shop all rugs

Warm living room anchored by a generously sized rug

Start here

Three principles that prevent nearly every sizing mistake

01 · FurnitureMeasure the arrangement, not only the room.

The rug should connect the furniture and define the living zone.

02 · BorderLet the floor breathe.

In an enclosed room, generally leave 12 to 24 in (30 to 60 cm) of visible floor around the rug.

03 · When in doubtChoose the larger size.

A rug that is too small fragments a room; a generous rug creates a calmer, more intentional composition.

Placement guide

What rug size works best in each room?

Use the furniture as your starting point. These diagrams show the recommended placement and the most common sizes.

Living room

Connect every seat

At minimum, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on the rug.

Small: 5 x 8 or 6 x 9 ft
Versatile: 8 x 10 ft
Large: 9 x 12 or 10 x 14 ft

6 x 9 8 x 10 9 x 12 10 x 14

Dining room

Keep the chairs on the rug

Add at least 24 in (60 cm) around the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled back.

4 seats: often 6 x 9 ft
6 seats: often 8 x 10 ft
8 to 10 seats: 9 x 12 ft or larger

Bedroom

Create a comfortable landing

Place the rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, with visible coverage at the sides and foot.

Double bed: 5 x 8 or 6 x 9 ft
Queen bed: 8 x 10 ft
King bed: 9 x 12 ft

5 x 8 8 x 10 9 x 12 Runners

Entryway

Check the door

Choose a 2 x 3, 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 ft rug based on the width of the entry, and confirm door clearance.

Kitchen

Protect the active zone

A small rug at the sink or a runner in a galley kitchen adds comfort without interrupting traffic.

Hallway

Keep a visible border

Leave approximately 3 to 6 in (8 to 15 cm) of visible floor on both sides and keep doorways clear.

Feel and everyday use

Which rug material should you choose?

Fibre affects softness, appearance, stain resistance and care. Construction and pile height matter as well.

Wool

Resilient, soft and naturally comfortable. A strong choice for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.

Jute

Organic and textural, ideal for adding warmth and natural colour to dry indoor rooms.

Cotton

Relaxed and flexible. Check the label: a cotton rug is not automatically machine washable.

Polyester, polypropylene, viscose or a blend?

Polyester — pattern and everyday care

Polyester is a synthetic fibre used in many easy-care rugs. For a family living room, compare low-pile designs and permitted cleaning methods. Fibre content alone guarantees neither machine washability nor resistance to every stain.

Polypropylene — a practical option to compare

Polypropylene is a synthetic fibre often chosen for stain resistance. For dining rooms and busy passages, also consider surface texture and how easily chairs move. Outdoor use must be explicitly approved: not every synthetic rug is suitable for a patio.

Viscose — sheen with extra care

Viscose offers a silky appearance but needs extra care around liquids, including water. If spills are frequent, we recommend comparing easier-care designs first. Blot promptly and follow the manufacturer’s directions or seek specialist advice.

Blends — read the full composition

A rug can combine natural and synthetic fibres. A “wool rug” is not necessarily 100% wool. Compare proportions, construction and cleaning requirements instead of choosing from one highlighted fibre alone.

Choose for what happens in your room

Under a dining table: measure actual chair pullback and compare lower surfaces that let chairs move easily. Include the rug pad when checking thickness.
With pets: identify your priority: vacuuming hair, cleaning accidents or avoiding snagged claws. A washable label does not automatically address all three.
In a bedroom: balance the comfort you want beside the bed with the care you can manage. A plush pile and a lower woven surface feel different.

Performance is a feature, not a fibre

Stain resistance, machine washability and outdoor suitability are separate properties. Compare the manufacturer’s claims for each design. Explore performance rugs.

Main need	Good starting point	Confirm before buying
Softness and longevity	Wool or a wool blend	Shedding, pile and cleaning method
Natural texture	Jute or natural fibre	Moisture, texture and fibre blend
Children, pets and traffic	Performance or washable	Stated resistance, washer capacity and drying
Patio or veranda	Indoor-outdoor	Approved exposure, drainage and seasonal storage

Understanding quality

Construction changes the feel, appearance and care

Hand-knotted

Each knot is tied individually. Knot density, fibre and finishing affect detail and longevity.

View the collection →

Handwoven

Hand weaving often creates a lower, textural surface with subtle variations that reflect the handmade process.

View the collection →

Hand-tufted

Yarn is inserted through a backing with a hand-operated tool. The result is often plush and may shed at first.

Power-loomed

Mechanical looms produce precise patterns, consistent sizing and a broad range of fibres and price points.

Make your rug last

Four essential care habits

01

Vacuum gently

Use low power and avoid an aggressive beater bar, especially on fringe and delicate constructions.

02

Blot, never rub

Absorb spills quickly with a clean, undyed cloth, then follow the manufacturer's directions.

03

Rotate regularly

Turn the rug every 3 to 6 months to balance sunlight and foot traffic.

04

Add a rug pad

Choose one compatible with your floor and slightly smaller than the rug to improve grip and comfort.

Product-specific care instructions always take priority. Performance, outdoor and washable are not interchangeable terms.

Compare two designs

Cornwall or Bracken: which texture suits your space?

These examples show why fibre and construction should be considered together.

Cornwall Charcoal / Natural

Jean Stoffer × Loloi. Handwoven; 53% jute and 47% wool; stated pile height of 0.25 in (about 6 mm).

Consider it for: a quieter surface profile and striped pattern. For a dining room, check how easily your chairs move.

Explore Jean Stoffer × Loloi →

Bracken Bark / Taupe

Leanne Ford × Loloi. Hand-knotted; 93% wool, 5% cotton and 2% other fibres; stated pile height of 0.75 in (about 19 mm).

Consider it for: a living room or bedroom where you want more depth. Allow sufficient door clearance and use an appropriate vacuum setting.

Explore Leanne Ford × Loloi →

Shedding is expected with both designs; the manufacturer recommends professional cleaning. A lower profile does not automatically mean less maintenance.

Specifications apply to the named colourways and were checked with Loloi on September 26, 2026: Cornwall CRN-01 and Bracken BKN-03.

Frequently asked questions

What to know before ordering

What is the most versatile rug size?

An 8 x 10 ft rug works in many living rooms, primary bedrooms and six- to eight-seat dining areas. The correct size still depends on the furniture arrangement rather than room area alone.

Does every living-room piece need to sit on the rug?

No. In a compact room, the front legs of the seating may rest on the rug. In a large room, placing the full arrangement on a 9 x 12 or 10 x 14 ft rug usually creates a more cohesive look.

How far should a rug extend beyond a dining table?

Allow at least 24 in (60 cm) beyond every side of the table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled back.

Do wool rugs always shed?

Some initial shedding can be normal, particularly with certain hand-tufted wool rugs. It varies by fibre and construction and should lessen with appropriate care.

Are all performance rugs machine washable?

No. Performance, machine washability, stain resistance and outdoor approval are separate specifications. Check the individual product details.

Are the listed dimensions exact?

Sizes such as 8 x 10 ft are nominal. Actual measurements can vary slightly by brand, collection and construction. Confirm the selected variant.

What are the delivery time and shipping cost?

Rugs generally have an estimated delivery time of 3 to 6 weeks depending on the design, size and supplier availability. Shipping is free on rugs.

The Nella lagoon / sand rug by Amber Lewis × Loloi reinterprets traditional motifs in soft, sun-washed colours. Its nuanced pattern and short fringed edges bring warmth to living rooms, bedrooms and dining spaces.

Power-loomed in polyester, its welcoming surface suits everyday living spaces. Choose from fourteen sizes, including rectangles, runners, two round formats and a square.

Care

Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry sponge or cloth. Professional cleaning is recommended. Vacuum on low power without a beater bar, or with the bar raised to its highest setting. Vacuum the full length of the rug, then turn and repeat on the next section rather than moving back and forth. A suitable rug pad is recommended to reduce slipping, add comfort and help extend the life of the rug.
